HS – Core Subjects

In the Sawyer Scholastics system, the following courses are the core subjects for high school and are required to be taken by every student. Students may choose to replace Pre-Caluculus / Calculus with a Statistics course.

Mathematics

Algebra 1

Students will excel in linear equations and inequalities, mastering the art of solving them using substitution, elimination, and graphing techniques. They’ll apply these skills to real-world problems involving proportions and rates of change and learn to graphically represent and interpret linear inequalities. Building algebraic fluency, they’ll simplify and manipulate expressions with exponents, factor polynomials, and perform operations with rational expressions. They’ll also solve equations and inequalities involving polynomials using algebraic properties and strategies.

In functions and relationships, students will define and analyze linear and quadratic functions using equations, graphs, and tables, recognizing and interpreting transformations such as shifts and stretches. They’ll apply these functions to solve real-world problems. Systems of equations and inequalities will be tackled with various methods, including matrices, and students will graph and analyze these systems to solve practical problems.

Data analysis and statistics will involve interpreting data sets using measures of central tendency and dispersion, creating and interpreting graphs like histograms and box plots, and solving probability problems involving simple events. Geometric reasoning will be applied to solve measurement and spatial relationship problems, utilizing the Pythagorean theorem and calculating area and perimeter of basic shapes.

Effective problem-solving strategies will be developed across diverse math topics, constructing logical arguments, and learning from mistakes. Technology integration will enhance their learning experience through graphing calculators and online resources. Cultivating a positive math attitude, students will embrace challenges, collaborate effectively, and appreciate the beauty of mathematics.

Algebra 2

Deepening functions and their applications guides students through polynomial, exponential, and logarithmic functions, focusing on their properties, transformations, and graphical representations. They’ll model real-world phenomena in physics, engineering, economics, and social sciences.

Building algebraic fluency equips students to master complex numbers, matrices, polynomials, radicals, and inequalities, enabling them to solve intricate problems and equations, preparing them for higher mathematics and real-world applications.

Exploring sequences and series introduces students to mathematical patterns and infinite sums. They’ll define arithmetic and geometric sequences, compute their elements, and explore infinite series through convergence tests, applying these concepts in finance and probability.

Conquering trigonometry reveals geometric relationships and trigonometric identities. Students will master the unit circle and trigonometric functions, solving problems in vectors, complex numbers, and wave phenomena, applying these concepts in navigation, engineering, and physics.

Students will master geometric proofs using logic, axioms, and postulates, proving theorems about lines, angles, triangles, and parallelograms. They’ll apply concepts like congruency, similarity, and angle relationships, enhancing critical thinking through indirect proofs and fallacy analysis.

In two-dimensional geometry, students will classify and analyze polygons, calculate area, perimeter, and volume, and prove triangle congruency and similarity, applying concepts in fields like architecture and design.

In three-dimensional geometry, students will visualize figures like spheres and cylinders, mastering surface area and volume calculations, and solve real-world spatial problems.

They’ll define and use right triangle trigonometric ratios (sine, cosine, tangent) and apply the Pythagorean theorem and identities in practical scenarios.

Spatial reasoning and visualization skills will be developed through transformations and geometric constructions. Students will explore circle properties, proving theorems about inscribed and circumscribed circles, and constructing tangent lines.

Pre-Calculus / Calculus

Students can choose to take a combined Pre-Calculus / Calculus course (1 semester each) or a full course in both. Students may also choose to take the AP Pre-Caluculus and Calculus courses.

  • AP Pre-Calculus
  • AP Calculus AB is an introductory college-level course in calculus that explores the concepts and applications of differential and integral calculus. This AP course culminates in an AP Exam that’s designed to test your understanding of the theoretical basis of course content and your ability to solve problems by applying your knowledge and skills.
  • AP Calculus BC is similar to AP Calculus AB. It explores the same concepts and applications, only it adds a few new topics. In other words, AP Calculus BC covers more content than AP Calculus AB, though both courses require you to apply the same skills.
